Punch press is a device that is primarily used to change the shape of a piece of metal sheet. A metal sheet is passed through the machine. The machine clamps down on the metal sheet and cuts it to a predetermined shape. In some cases, this punching device may cut and eject the metal sheet in a single station. Other pieces of metal sheets may require to be passed through several stations in order to get the final shape. The process where the metal sheets have to pass through several stations of the punching device is known as a progressive die. Using a punching device for making holes on metal sheets is more cost effective than drilling.
The manually operated punch presses are very simple and small machines. The computer numerical control (CNC) operated; metal punching devices are usually very large and complex. A computer system is programmed to operate the large punching devices. These metal punching devices consist of table with rollers or brushes. Brushes are used to minimize the scratches on the workpiece, such as brushed aluminum and high polished metal sheets. Both large and small metal punching devices use a die set. The die set used to operate large punching devices are usually more complex. The die set consists of female dies and male punches. When the dies and punches are pressed together by the machine, the metal sheet is cut or shaped into the desired form.

These metal punching machines are utilized for high volume production. The capacity of a punch press is measured in accordance with its tonnage. Specific materials require specific tonnage to get processed. A 10 ton punching device is considered a small unit. Metal processing industries commonly use a 60 ton punching device.
Both large and small metal punching devices require a craftsman to prepare them for operation. However, setting up the punching machine can be a bit time consuming. After the machine is set by the craftsmen a low skilled operator can monitor the progress of the machine and continue the operation. In fact, an operator can simultaneously monitor the operations of several punching machines.
Here are few tips on how to operate a punch press:
Set the female die along with the male punch. Make sure that the punch travels freely through the die.
Insert the metal sheet into the machine. Ensure that you have lined up the metal piece in the correct position so that the holes are created where you want them to be. Bring the punch down till it barely rests on the metal sheet.
Clamp down the metal piece using a bar clamp. This will prevent the metal sheet from slipping while the holes are being created.
Pull down the handle bar attached to the side of the punch press. Pulling the long handle provides a certain amount of leverage that is required for creating a hole on the metal sheet.
